Obituary

Owen Francis Maguire

Owen Maguire, 89, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2020, surrounded by the love of his family.

Owen was born on September 17, 1930, in Newark, NJ, and raised in Newark and Kearny NJ. He was athletic and competed in many sports including football: playing with New York Giants legend Alex Webster. Owen developed a love for the military and his country. He joined the United States Army at the age of 17 and served for six years including tours in Korea with the 3rd Division, where he served with valor in significant battles in Armor and Infantry and received numerous commendations. He also served in Germany with the 6th Infantry Regiment, where he guarded Nazi War criminals at Spandau Prison. Upon his return from service, he began working as a Teamster; he was a member of Locals 641, 560 and 701 at various points in his tenure. He was employed by Adley Express Company and Yellow Freight Systems. The people he worked with were important to him and he was a strong advocate for the union supporting its members.

On September 21, 1957, he married Margaret Patricia Burke of West Orange. Together they began a family and moved to Middletown NJ, where they raised their seven children. Owen coached his and many other children in MYAA sports programs. He truly enjoyed the beach and loved time spent with his sisters and brothers in law and all his nieces and nephews.

Family was the most important thing to him, and he was proud of all his children and grandchildren. His Irish heritage honored him. He was a life member of VFW Post 2179 Middletown, American Legion Post 338 Leonardo NJ, and The Military Order of the Cooties and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Owen was predeceased by his parents, John and Julia (Fitzsimmons) Maguire, his beloved wife, Patricia and his dear sisters and brothers in law

Owen is survived by his children, John (Lisa), Tom (Barbara), Eileen, Maureen Midose (Stan), Michael(Crickett), Daniel(Kim) and Kathy Greig (Norm) He is also survived by his nineteen grandchildren, John(Megan) Michael(Missy) Kristen(Matt), Steven, Ryan, Josh, Brittany, Kaitlin, Chelsea, Jeff, Alexis, Ricky, Danny, Kevin, Brendan, Lindsey, Morgan, Matthew, and
